How to use a French press?

Coffee lovers know that each brewing method brings a unique flavor. One such method is the French press, also known as the French press. It is loved for its simplicity and ability to produce rich, flavorful coffee. Discover in this step-by-step guide how to use a French press to add a touch of elegance to your morning ritual.

Necessary material

  • A French press coffee maker
  • Coarsely ground coffee
  • Hot water (not boiling)
  • A wooden or metal spoon
  • A kitchen scale (optional)
  • A kettle

Step 1

Start by measuring out how much coffee you need. The general rule is to use about 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams of water. For a 1-liter coffee maker; that's about 66 grams of coffee. If you don't have a scale, you can use 4 tablespoons of ground coffee for every cup of water. With practice, you can fine-tune the amounts to make coffee that's just right for you.

Step 2

Heat the water to about 90°C - 96°C. If you don't have a thermometer, let the water boil and then let it sit for about 30 seconds to reach the ideal temperature. Avoid pouring boiling water directly onto the coffee, as this could burn the coffee and alter its taste.

Step 3

Place the ground coffee in the bottom of the French press, pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee to moisten it, just enough to cover the beans. Let it sit for about 30 seconds, this allows the coffee to "bloom", releasing the aromas.

Step 4

After pre-infusion, slowly pour the remaining hot water into the coffee maker. Stir gently with a wooden or metal spoon to ensure the coffee is evenly moistened. Place the wooden lid with the plunger up on the coffee maker to maintain heat.

Step 5

Let the coffee brew for about 4 minutes. Adjust the brewing time according to your preferences. The longer you let the coffee brew, the stronger and more intense the taste will be.

Step 6

Once the brewing time is up, slowly press the plunger to separate the coffee grounds from the liquid. Make sure to press evenly and smoothly to avoid grounds rising or the screen breaking. Serve immediately to enjoy all the freshness and aroma of the coffee.

After each use, disassemble the French press and clean all parts. The wooden lid can be wiped with a damp cloth, but do not leave it to soak in water as this may damage the wood. The other parts can be washed in hot soapy water.
